Knowledge Development: all theory may be completed at home through PADI eLearning.
Ocean Dives: gathering information and resources, then carefully planning a search are the first important steps you’ll learn. Over 4 ocean dives, you’ll practice:
- Swimming search patterns using your compass and natural navigation
- Locating large and small objects using various search patterns
- Using a lift bag for large or heavy objects, plus other recovery methods
- Planning a search operation based on facts gathered about a lost object prior to the dive
Minimum Age: 12 years old
Certification: minimum PADI Advanced Open Water (or Jr. Advanced Open Water) certification or equivalent OR PADI Open Water (or Jr. Open Water) certification with PADI Navigation Specialty also qualify

During your Search and Recovery course, you will use basic scuba gear (BCD, regulator, tanks, weights, drysuit or wetsuit). You will also get to use a lift bag, compass, dive computer, and other gear that may help you with your searches.
We recommend investing in the following gear during or after your course: Mask, snorkel, fins, boots, gloves, hood, and dive computer. These items have a specific fit to each diver, and having your own will make your experience more enjoyable and familiar.
